MBBS in Georgia: 6 Years or 8 Years? Latest Georgian Clarification and NMC Licensing Concerns Explained

Is MBBS in Georgia a six-year course, or do Indian students now need eight years to become eligible to practise? Recent reports about medical licensing, junior-doctor status and India’s NMC requirements have left many students and parents uncertain.

The answer requires separating two timelines: the duration of the medical degree and the pathway to professional licensing.

Georgia’s updated official explanation continues to describe a six-year MD programme. The licensing debate concerns whether the professional rights available after graduation satisfy India’s applicable requirements. These are related questions, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.

This guide examines the October developments, Georgia’s clarification and the questions Indian students should resolve before making an admission decision.

Why Is There Confusion About MBBS in Georgia

For families considering MBBS abroad, “six years” often sounds like a complete answer: finish the course, return to India, clear the required examination and proceed towards registration.

However, a course brochure cannot establish the complete licensing pathway.

Three separate milestones need examination:

Milestone The question students should ask

Medical qualification

What degree will I receive, and when?
Internship

What practical training must I complete, and how will it be documented?

Professional registration or licence What medical work will I legally be authorised to perform after graduation?

The recent controversy centres on the third milestone particularly the meaning of Georgia’s junior-doctor status in relation to India’s foreign medical graduate requirements.

What Did the Recent NMC Coverage Say

Indian Express/PTI coverage on 7–8 October 2026 reported NMC’s response to a grievance about Georgian graduates.

The reported response was conditional: junior-doctor status would satisfy the requirement only if it legally permitted practice at the required level. If independent practice required postgraduate certification, junior-doctor status alone would not satisfy Regulation 4(b). NMC reportedly said the position must be determined with reference to Georgian law and licensing requirements.

This is more precise than interpreting a headline as either universal approval or universal rejection.

Latest Georgian Clarification on Medical Education

Georgia’s National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement NCEQE, the education quality authority under the education ministry updated its official explanation on 14 October 2026.

Its position includes the following:

Issue What NCEQE states

Duration

Six academic years, with at least 360 ECTS credits.

Internship

The sixth year is dedicated to mandatory internship.

Teaching medium

English-taught programmes include clinical training in English.
Graduate employment

Georgian and foreign graduates have equal access to junior-doctor roles.

Practice documentation

Graduates may request regulatory confirmation with an individual registration number and legally defined practice rights.

Indian requirements

NCEQE states that the qualification complies with FMGL regulations.

These are Georgia’s official explanations of its system and its position on compliance. They should be attributed to NCEQE rather than presented as a new NMC approval.

Is the Georgian Education Ministry Statement New

Students may also encounter a document titled Information of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia regarding the medical education system in Georgia.

The version published by the Georgian Embassy in India is dated 9 August 2024. It describes a six-year programme including internship and explains junior-doctor work under a certified specialist’s guidance. It also expresses Georgia’s position that its medical education complies with NMC requirements.

The date matters. A document circulating again in October is not necessarily a newly issued ministry order.

For this discussion, the significant October development is the updated NCEQE explanation.

MBBS in Georgia Six Years or Eight Years

The official explanation reviewed describes the MD degree as six years. It does not announce a universal eight-year undergraduate course.

The longer-duration discussion arises when people add possible postgraduate training or licensing stages to the degree.

Georgia’s earlier official explanation describes a route to independent practice involving a postgraduate qualification examination, residency and state certification. That is a professional pathway beyond the undergraduate qualification, rather than evidence that the degree itself has been renamed an eight-year course.

Therefore, students should ask: Six years to obtain which qualification and what further steps apply to the practice rights I need?

Avoid assuming a fixed “six plus two” calculation for every student. The relevant pathway, requirements and acceptance by the destination regulator need to be established.

Is Junior Doctor Status an Independent Medical Licence

Georgia’s Medical Practice Law distinguishes junior-doctor work under an authorised practitioner’s responsibility from independent medical practice supported by a state certificate. Limited emergency provisions should not be interpreted as unrestricted independent practice rights.

This is why the exact document and its legal scope matter.

A certificate may be official and still authorise a particular category of practice. Students should establish:

  • Which authority issues it.
  • Whether it records educational status, professional registration or practice rights.
  • What work it permits.
  • Whether supervision is required.
  • Whether further training or examinations apply.

The word “registered” alone does not answer all these questions.

What Do NMC FMGL Regulations Require

For students covered by the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, the principal requirements include:

  • A medical course lasting at least 54 months.
  • At least 12 months of internship in the same foreign medical institution.
  • English as the medium of instruction.
  • The prescribed subjects and training.
  • Host-country professional registration/licensing meeting Regulation 4(b), at par with citizens.
  • The required examination and supervised internship in India.

The regulations also contain applicability provisions for earlier cohorts. Students should establish which rules govern their admission history.

A family evaluating MBBS in Georgia should examine every relevant requirement. A satisfactory answer on duration does not, by itself, settle the licensing issue.

Does a Sixth Year Internship Automatically Establish Compliance

Students should obtain the actual internship structure, rather than rely only on the number of years advertised.

NMC’s FAQs distinguish internship from clinical postings during academic study and explain that the foreign internship is an additional practical phase within undergraduate medical education.

For a proposed university, request:

  1. Academic study dates and internship dates.
  2. Department-wise rotations and duration.
  3. Hospital names and their relationship with the institution.
  4. Attendance, assessment and clinical logbook requirements.
  5. The exact completion certificate issued.

These documents help turn a general assurance into a programme-specific explanation that can be reviewed by the relevant authorities.

Has NMC Accepted the Latest Georgian Clarification

For this update, we did not verify a subsequent NMC notice expressly accepting the 14 October explanation as resolving the licensing concern.

This is a verification limit, rather than a finding that the Georgian clarification has been rejected.

There are two different questions:

  • What does Georgia say its graduates are qualified and authorised to do?
  • Does the Indian regulator accept that status as satisfying the applicable Indian requirement?

The first question now has a more detailed public explanation. Students still need to follow authoritative Indian instructions concerning their eligibility.

What About the Recent ETEducation Article

ETEducation published Georgia’s statement on medical degrees: What Indian students need to know on 21 October 2026, discussing the updated Georgian explanation.

The page is labelled “Brand Connect Initiative.” It is useful coverage to examine, but it should not be described as an NMC notification or substituted for the underlying official documents.

For admission decisions, trace important claims back to the issuing authority.

What Should Students Planning MBBS in Georgia Do

Ask for a Written Programme Explanation

Request answers from the university’s authorised academic or international office. Ask it to identify the programme, intake, curriculum, internship and post-graduation professional status.

Save the response with your admission documents.

Verify the Scope of the Proposed Practice Certificate

Ask for a sample document and the legal provision under which it is issued. Establish whether it relates to supervised junior-doctor employment or independent practice.

Where uncertainty remains, seek written clarification from the competent regulator rather than relying on a consultant’s interpretation.

Plan the Complete Budget

Prepare a budget that separates:

  • The advertised degree period.
  • Examination and registration expenses.
  • Any additional training required by the verified pathway.
  • Living costs during potential delays.
  • The return-to-India process.

Do not assume additional years are inevitable. Equally, do not exclude them from financial planning when the pathway has not been resolved.

What Should Students Already Studying in Georgia Do

Existing students should first organise their records and obtain programme-specific answers.

Keep copies of enrolment records, curricula, transcripts, attendance evidence, clinical logbooks, internship documents and regulatory correspondence.

Avoid making a rushed transfer or withdrawal decision based on a headline. Before changing institutions, obtain advice on how the move could affect your applicable requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has MBBS in Georgia become an eight year degree

The official clarification reviewed continues to describe a six-year MD. Discussion of longer timelines concerns further professional requirements, rather than a universal change in undergraduate duration.

Does the Georgian clarification remove every licensing concern

It explains Georgia’s position more fully. It should not be presented as proof of a subsequent Indian regulatory acceptance that has not been verified.

Can I rely on the term junior doctor licence

Ask for the actual document, issuing authority and permitted scope of practice. Marketing terminology is not a substitute for those details.

Is passing FMGE alone enough

For students governed by FMGL 2021, examination success is one element of the wider eligibility and registration framework described above.

Should I choose or reject Georgia solely because of this debate

Make the decision using your specific programme, applicable rules, verified professional pathway and budget. Neither reassurance nor fear should replace documentary clarity.
